據中國地震台網測定，8月30日13時27分在新疆維吾爾自治區烏魯木齊市發生5.1級地震。不少民眾家中牆壁震裂，天花板掉落，市區震感強烈。

中新網報導，烏魯木齊市民劉偉光表示，地震時他正開車在路上，車子都在晃動。市民李女士單位距離新疆大學不遠，她表示，當時她在七樓，感覺到桌子都在晃動。

據新疆地震局台網初步測定，這次5.1級地震，地震震中位於北緯43.8°，東經87.6°。地震發生時，震感強烈，記者所在的房屋晃動持續近10秒。

目前還沒有人員傷亡和財產損失的報告。

另有新疆民眾在新浪微博發文稱，地震後，新疆大學師生都跑到空曠處躲避，民眾也不敢進家門，都在戶外待著，心有餘悸。部分商店則拉下鐵門，暫停買賣，售貨員也外出避難。
