法新社報導，天主教教宗方濟各13日針對墮胎議題，發表迄今最強烈的譴責，稱墮胎是「拋棄文化」的一種現象，墮胎者太不重視人命的價值。

教宗表示，提前終止懷孕的想法令人覺得「可怕」。他說，試想全球每天浪費多少食物，這是我經常說的「拋棄文化」，不幸的是，「被拋棄的不僅是食物與可有可無之物，「經常還有人類本身，人被當做『非必要』而被丟棄」，「一想到有兒童，墮胎的受害人，永遠無法見到天日，就覺得可怕」。
