美國有線電視新聞網（CNN）報導，波斯灣國家為了在全球不再依賴石油的將來維持經濟成長，紛紛爭取國外知名大學前往設立分校，發展以知識為基礎的經濟。

阿拉伯聯合大公國經濟樞紐杜拜有52所大學，卡達則有一座大學城，包括卡內基美隆、康乃爾、喬治城與西北大學等美國名校都在當地設立分校。阿布達比（阿聯大公國的首都兼政治中心）的紐約大學四年前招收的第一屆學生將在明年畢業。
